Alonzo King LINES Ballet

"Brilliant" — SF Chronicle Alonzo King LINES Ballet pays tribute to the iconic Alice Coltrane—spiritual leader, composer, pianist, and harpist—and the imaginative storytelling of Maurice Ravel in Ma mère l’Oye (Mother Goose) through King’s electrifying choreography. Since childhood, King has been captivated by Coltrane’s music, even choreographing one of his first pieces to her work. Now, he’s diving back into her legacy to create a ballet with Coltrane’s masterpieces, including Journey In Satchidananda —recognized as one of Rolling Stone’s greatest albums— A Monastic Trio , Universal Consciousness , and Ptah, the El Daoud , continue to inspire. Additionally, the program highlights King’s recent collaboration with the San Francisco Symphony, where dancers explore Ravel’s enchanting 1912 suite Ma mère l’Oye (Mother Goose) with a fresh twist. “I’m not trying to recreate Mother Goose fairy tales,” King explains. “My goal is to uncover the deeper allegorical meanings behind them and bring those to life through dance.”

Pines of Rome
Segerstrom Center for the Arts -Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall

Pines of Rome

Celebrate the power of nature and new horizons in music: The dazzling razzmatazz of Bernstein’s high-spirited musical prelude sets the stage for two contemporary works that follow: a new piano concerto by esteemed African American composer Adolphus Hailstork and a new and colorful orchestral work by Pacific Symphony’s Vietnamese American Composer-in-Residence, Viet Cuong. Respighi’s tone poem paints in music the grandeur and history of the Eternal City, including a recording of an actual Italian nightingale singing a serene nocturne! Adolphus Hailstork has written the following about his new work: "My second piano concerto, written for Lara Downes, is a tranquil fantasy piece subtitled "the peaceable kingdom" based on a series of paintings of the same name. But the third concerto (commissioned by Jeffrey Biegel), subtitled "the way things really are" reflects the opposite: the meanness and cruel belligerency in the world, with two wars—which began during the composing of the piece—serving as examples. There is a slight reference to a medieval Ukrainian lullaby." Preview Talk at 7 p.m. with KUSC midday host Alan Chapman

Which One's Pink?

Which One's Pink?

Special Guest - Natural Science Which One's Pink ? (W1P), an eclectic group of Los Angeles-based musicians that joined together to pay homage to perhaps the most legendary classic rock band of all time -- Pink Floyd, returns to Grove of Anaheim, Saturday, February 22, 2025 with special guests Natural Science - Rush Tribute. Founded in 1997 by musician-turned-lawyer Larry Isenberg, Which One's Pink ? derives its name from the classic line "the band is just fantastic, that is really what I think, oh by the way, which one's pink?" from Pink Floyd's song Have A Cigar . Which One's Pink ? has built a large following by word of mouth from its performances at the premier live music venues throughout the southwestern United States. Unlike many tribute bands, Which One's Pink? makes no effort to appear like their predecessors, instead focusing exclusively on recreating the surrealistic sound and psychedelic atmosphere associated with Pink Floyd. Lead singer and guitarist Paul Samarin eerily reproduces Pink Floyd’s distinctive vocals, and his guitar playing so closely mirrors Gilmour's solos that one swears the band must be running sequenced samples taken from the original recordings. Guitarist Allen Moreno captures the often hypnotic rhythm guitar parts, with Scott Richards (bass and vocals) and Marty Brumer (drums) completing the rock steady rhythm section. Larry Isenberg and Nick Feduska use multiple keyboards to paint the vast auditory canvas from which virtually all of the Floyd’s catalogue gets its distinctive ethereal sound. The band played its first show Feb. 1998, at the Roxy in Hollywood. Since then, W1P has performed approximately 500 shows throughout California, Nevada, Arizona and Texas.

Amy Grant

Amy Grant

Six-time GRAMMY®-winner Amy Grant returns to Grove of Anaheim, Sunday, February 23, 2025, with An Evening With Amy Grant – Songs/Stories/Memories. Amy Grant's career spans more than 40 years and stretches from her roots in gospel into becoming an iconic pop star, songwriter, television personality, philanthropist and has become as some have dubbed her, ‘The Queen of Christmas’ with her millions of Christmas albums sold over the years. With three multi-platinum albums, six platinum albums and four gold albums, her total career album sales have exceeded 30 million and over 1 billion global streams. Grant’s chart success has been consistent throughout her career with six No. 1 hits, 10 Top 40 pop singles, 17 Top 40 Adult Contemporary tracks and multiple Contemporary Christian chart-toppers. In addition to her six GRAMMY® Awards, Grant has earned 26 Dove Awards (including four Artist of the Year Awards) and has been awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as well as the Music City Walk of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Conventional wisdom has it that Grant put Contemporary Christian Music on the map becoming the first Contemporary Christian artist to have a platinum record, the first to hit No. 1 on the Pop charts and the first to perform at the GRAMMY® Awards. With that, her legacy as one of the most influential artists of the past four decades is assured. Amy has established herself as an iconic ‘Christmas’ artist as well with not only millions of Christmas albums sold, but also her annual Christmas Tours with the likes of Michael W. Smith, Marc Martel, Jordan Sparks and many others. Additionally, for the past 19 years, Amy and her husband Vince Gill, perform an annual two-week residency at the legendary Ryman Auditorium in Nashville with their ‘Christmas At The Ryman’ shows. In 2022, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts included Grant as one of their five distinguished Honorees to receive the 45th Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime artistic achievements. In 2020, the T.J. Martell Foundation – the music industry’s leading nonprofit to fund innovative medical research focused on treatments and cures for cancer – honored Grant with the Tony Martell Outstanding Entertainment Achievement Award at their annual Honors Gala. In 2023, Grant released her first new music in a decade, including the new singles “Trees We’ll Never See” and “What You Heard.” Late that year she also released “Lead Me On Live 1989,” a full-concert documentation from her 1988-1989 Lead Me On Tour. In 2024 Amy has continued on the road performing in more than 60 cities across the country.
