Professional meeting and convention planners are increasingly looking for destinations that demonstrate strong crisis preparedness, coordinated communications, and can respond quickly when unexpected situations arise.
Recently, Anaheim demonstrated those capabilities in real time.
Following a toxic chemical leak in a neighboring city that led to the evacuation of more than 50,000 residents, Visit Anaheim activated the same hospitality network, communications infrastructure, and industry partnerships that support millions of visitors and hundreds of meetings and conventions each year.
The Situation: A Community Emergency
The incident began on May 21, when an overheated storage tank containing a toxic chemical became unstable at a facility in neighboring Garden Grove. As concerns grew that the tank could rupture or explode, evacuation orders expanded across six Orange County cities, affecting approximately 40,000–50,000 residents, including portions of west Anaheim. The emergency remained active for five days, with evacuation orders lifted on May 26 after first responders successfully stabilized the tank. Throughout the incident, public information evolved rapidly, with emergency officials issuing multiple updates each day as conditions changed, making timely, accurate communication essential for residents, businesses, and community partners.
While the incident was unrelated to tourism, meetings, or events, the response offered a powerful example of destination readiness, demonstrating how a destination organization can quickly mobilize people, resources, and information when a community needs them most.
A Rapid Response Powered by Partnerships
As evacuation orders expanded, displaced residents urgently needed reliable information and temporary accommodations.
Within 3 hours, Visit Anaheim launched a dedicated emergency resource webpage, providing a centralized hub for hotel availability, evacuation updates, and community resources. The page became a trusted source for residents, media, and partner organizations seeking timely information throughout the response.
At the same time, Visit Anaheim activated its extensive hospitality network.
Working directly with hotel partners across Anaheim, the team quickly identified available inventory and compiled lodging options for displaced families. More than 11 Anaheim-area and 8 Orange County-area hotels offered special rates and participated in the coordinated effort -all while entering in to a major holiday weekend where hotel availability was limited and high visitation was expected.
Behind the scenes, communications teams worked continuously to keep residents, businesses, community partners, and local media informed through a shared, up-to-date source of information as conditions changed.
The result wasn't simply a communications effort, it was a destination-wide activation.

Built for Coordination Before It's Needed
The speed of Anaheim's response wasn't accidental.
Every year, Visit Anaheim coordinates with hotels, venues, transportation providers, civic leaders, and local businesses to support citywide conventions, sporting events, and meetings that bring thousands of attendees to the destination.
During the emergency, those same relationships enabled the organization to quickly share information, coordinate resources, and support community response efforts.
Instead of building a response network from scratch, Anaheim relied on an ecosystem that already communicates daily, solves logistical challenges together, and understands how to operate at scale.
That collaboration allowed resources to move faster, information to remain accurate, and community partners to respond with confidence.
A Network Built for Rapid Response
Destinations that successfully host millions of visitors annually rely on extensive coordination among hotels, venues, local agencies, and community partners. In Anaheim, that network quickly activated to support residents in need.
Key actions included:
- Launching a dedicated information landing page within hours
- Rapidly identifying and organizing available hotel inventory
- Coordinating unified communications across industry partners
- Amplifying critical information through media outreach
- Leveraging social media channels for timely updates
- Facilitating collaboration between public and private-sector stakeholders
The speed and effectiveness of the response demonstrated the value of established relationships and well-developed communications infrastructure.
Why Destination Readiness Matters for Meeting Planners
For planners, destination readiness has become an important component of risk management and attendee safety planning.
Questions such as:
- How quickly can a destination communicate during an emergency?
- Are hospitality partners aligned and connected?
- Can local organizations coordinate resources at scale?
- Is there an established framework for public-private collaboration?
are increasingly influencing destination selection decisions.
Anaheim's response provided real-world answers.
The same communications infrastructure used to distribute emergency information also supports attendee messaging during citywide conventions. The same hotel relationships that quickly assembled accommodations for displaced residents help coordinate room blocks for major events. And the same public-private partnerships that mobilized during this emergency routinely work together to deliver seamless experiences for meetings of every size.
When planners partner with Visit Anaheim, they're supported by a DMO experienced in bringing together multiple stakeholders, adapting to changing circumstances, and communicating with clarity.
