Anaheim may be the pulsing urban heart of Orange County, but it’s also near tranquil natural wonders for visitors to explore. Sitting right between the Santa Ana Mountains and the mighty blue Pacific Ocean, visitors can expect dramatic vistas with every hike around Anaheim. Orange County hiking trails offer an escape into forests, meadows, and beaches, all within a short drive from the theme parks and glamour of Anaheim. Cool coastal breezes and an average of 280 days of sunshine make the area a year-round hiking destination.

 

  • Crystal Cove State Park

Crystal Cove State Park

For breathtaking views of the Orange County coast, head down to Crystal Cove State Park in Laguna Beach. Although a beachside stroll along tide pools makes for an inspiring jaunt, the 2,400 acres of woods featuring camping sites and hiking trails here prove that this park is more than just another beautiful Southern California beach. It’s a strenuous hike to get to the top, but the ocean views from the top of Moro Ridge are unforgettable. On a clear day, you can see Catalina Island.

Carbon Canyon Park

Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea is more of a city park than a hiking area, but locals know that there is a trail here that leads to Orange County’s only grove of California coastal Redwoods, the world’s tallest trees, and a 4-acre lake stocked with catfish and trout for your fishing pleasure.

Oak Canyon Nature Center

Oak Canyon Nature Center features oak groves and trails that run through coastal sage scrub. It is great for casual hiking with the family, and the park offers a small museum that helps illuminate local wildlife for curious youngsters. Start at the Canyon Rim Park Trail Head which offers excellent city views on the way to the nature center. The Weir Canyon loop is only 3.8 miles and offers alternatives that are as short a mile and a half, making for a perfect afternoon escape.

Santiago Oaks Regional Park

Santiago Oaks Regional Park in Orange is equipped for avid hikers, featuring trails of various lengths and steepness for athletes of all skill levels. Features here include the rambling Santiago Creek and a grove of the orange trees that gave Orange County its name. Many hikes culminate in striking views of the bustling urban valley below.

Sycamore Park Trail Head 

Sycamore Park Trail Head leads to many extended hiking options on the Weir Canyon trails in the Anaheim Hills. There is a fun playground and green lawn for play before heading uphill. The journey isn’t too difficult and is suitable for hikers of any level. The walk-up features colorful springtime wildflower blooms and scenic picnic areas.

Yorba Regional Park

Yorba Regional Park is just off of the North Bank of the Santa Ana River. The lakes along the river are popular fishing spots for locals. The trails here are equally popular for runners and urban hikers seeking a peaceful place to exercise. From the loop around the lakes, the system extends to over 100 miles of multi-use trails going in all directions around Orange County.
