Juneteenth, held every June 19, commemorates the day the last enslaved people in the United States learned they were free, a significant step in our nation’s long journey toward equality and justice. Over time, several traditions have developed to honor the day, including community gatherings, meals, music, education, and remembrance. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021, but its roots go back much further, to the first celebrations in Texas in 1866.
Juneteenth celebrations in Anaheim and across Orange County continue to reflect how the holiday has grown. In 2026, local communities are once again marking the occasion with outdoor festivals, vendor markets, live performances, and family-friendly gatherings centered on freedom, culture, and community.
Here’s a look at some of the Juneteenth events currently on the calendar across the area.
Juneteenth 101: A Brief History Lesson

Juneteenth, short for June Nineteenth, is also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day. It marks the moment in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that more than 250,000 enslaved people in Texas were free, nearly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. The holiday has long been recognized as the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States.
