Research Shows 55 Percent of Americans Believe Road Trips are Here to Stay as Their Main Way of Traveling

ANAHEIM, Calif. (May 25, 2021) – Visit Anaheim, the official destination marketing organization for Anaheim, today released new research that shows 61 percent of Americans hope to take more road trips than ever this summer as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and limited travel in 2020. When asked which state would be the best for a road trip, 38 percent selected California, a year-round destination with 840 miles of coastline and world-class theme parks.

The survey of 2,000 Americans found many took advantage of in-state travel this past year, and half of respondents said they’ve had more time to explore their local area as a result of the pandemic. In fact, 67 percent of survey respondents said they have prioritized in-state travel because there is “so much” left to see in their own state.

“Road trips are such a safe and fun way to get outside, begin traveling again and see your state,” said Jay Burress, president & CEO, Visit Anaheim. “With California’s landmark attractions like Disneyland Resort reopening and professional sports teams like Angels baseball welcoming fans again, now is the perfect time to hop in the car and rediscover what’s in your own backyard.”

Less than 10 percent of respondents have been out of their home state in the past year, with 52 percent saying they feel the safest traveling within their state this summer since safety guidelines and restrictions vary per state. According to Destination Analysts, consumers believe taking a road trip is the safest travel activity that can be done right now. Seventy-four percent agree that taking a road trip is an activity that is “safe” or “very safe.”

“California is the Road Trip Republic – the world’s preeminent destination for hitting the open road,” said Caroline Beteta, president & CEO of Visit California. “We fully expect road trips to continue to dominate this summer’s travel scene as California residents, as well as our neighbors, start to feel more comfortable with travel and set out to rediscover nearby destinations, including the wide array of experiences our gateway communities like Anaheim have to offer.”

In Visit Anaheim’s survey, June was found to be the top month in which respondents would take a road trip (23 percent), followed by May (14 percent), and their perfect trip would take place over about four and a half days.
