If you’re looking for a high-energy event, you’ll hit a home run with the Savannah Bananas. The team known for their over-the-top antics and fan-centered fun are giving sports fans another reason to enjoy America’s pastime. If Anaheim’s own Gwen Stefani saw the Savannah Bananas, she’d likely change her “Hollaback Girl” lyrics to “This game is bananas, B-A-N-A-N-A-S!”

From Early Struggles to a Bunch of Fans

Founded in 2016, the Bananas began as part of the Coastal Plain League, a summer collegiate league. Poor ticket sales led owners Jesse and Emily Cole to sell their home and come up with what may have been a bananas idea: changing the team’s name.  But word caught on, and the team sold out its opening night at historic Grayson Stadium and every game since.

Curious why?

Banana Ball: The Most A-peel-ing Game Around

Often compared to the Harlem Globetrotters, the Savannah Bananas play the game unlike all others.  Part sporting event, part concert, and fully fun – the team takes sports entertainment in a new direction. The fan-focused spectacle includes choreographed dances, a batter on stilts, and a yellow-suited team owner.

We asked the Bananas’ owner some fun questions. Check out his video below:

The team left the Coastal Plain League in 2022 to play “Banana Ball” year-round.  Here are the rules of Banana Ball:

  • Two-hour time limit: Overripe games that drag on? Not here!
  • No bunting: Fans don’t like bunting, so it’s been peeled off the table.
  • Fan catches count as outs: Fans are at the forefront and can swing the game in their direction.
  • No walks allowed, but stealing first base is.

It’s not just the sport that drives fans bananas.  The highly entertaining games include players dancing to songs from pop stars like Taylor Swift or wild scoring celebrations. Their pre-pitch dances have compiled over 300 million views on TikTok. Joined by a dancing umpire, the “Banana Nanas,” a senior citizen dance team, and a break-dancing coach, the Savannah Bananas will get you on your feet.
